Coin Proof

How can you tell if a coin is a proof or not?
I love to collect coins of all kinds, but the other day i saw something about proofs of coins.... I was just woundering how you can tell if it is a proof or not??
Thanks to all!!
the proof coins have a frosted look to the raised part of the coin and the smooth part has a mirror like finish ..this appearance can be created by using special chemicals on the die that strikes the coin also the coin can be double struckwhich does not cause a ghost image just a well struck coin
