Why my silver Eagle Coin is turning yellowish / black?
I collect the coin and have been keeping them in a plastic coin cap individually. But some time I take them out to handle them. I've noticed that my Silver Eagle coins 1 oz 999 silver is turning color to yellow and black... why is this? And how do I clean them ? thank you.
Many older and even some newer plastic Coin Holders contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which will react with metals like copper and silver and cause a green residue over time. My best guess in your case is some type of sulfide has reacted with the silver in your coin which is causing the yellow and black color.
I will not make any promises that it will completely remove the problem, but I would try acetone to get the residue off of the coin. I have often seen acids and abrasives like vinegar, baking soda, toothpaste, etc. recommended on Yahoo Answers, but I would never use those to clean a coin. It may clean the surface, but it degrades or destroys the value of the coin.
I hope this helps. Good luck.
