just starting to collect coins ran into this terminology
Cameo Proof refers to a Proof Coin where the portrait or main design has a frosted, lustrous finish(such portrait is called a "cameo") that stands out in sharp contrast to the highly polished and deeply mirrored surface of the coin's fields. Most modern proof coins have a cameo, but they haven't always been made this way; other proofs like the Brilliant Proofs have shiny, mirror-like surfaces all over the coin with sharp and high-relief details, while Matte Proofs have the frosted finish all over.
